It is the style today that houses can have an extension built in the backyard, over a door, over windows, and ones that even go out to the sidewalk.  These extensions for shade are called awnings.  Made on a structure like a truss or a space or planar frame, it can be made of materials such as aluminum, steel, wood, iron, and even a canvas composed of cotton, polyester or vinyl.

Awnings can be used in various types of weather for you to enjoy the outdoor space of your home even if it’s rainy, windy or too sunny.  The furnishings you put under the awning are also protected from the moisture and heat and, therefore, last longer.  For areas that are mostly sunny and rare to no instances of rain or snow, people get the roll up awning.  These perform their function of shade only when it rains or gets snowy.  Otherwise, they can be rolled up against the building façade.

More recently, the roll up awning became the operable kind.  In the earlier times, awnings were affixed to sturdy frames and the main way to roll them up was manually.  These are like the awnings you can see in storefronts and window awnings that have an extension arms that are hinged to the façade.  They have a simple rope and pulley attachment to them to make it easier to roll up and roll down in case the weather gets bad.

At home, the roll up awning allows the homeowners to control them wherever they go around the house as long as one is installed on the outside. When it gets too hot or when passing showers threaten, a home automation system can unroll the awning for instant shade and protection. They increase the versatility and usefulness of a home’s patio or deck in that people can still stay outdoors under the protection of the awning. They can get patio lights installed under it safely as the mist, rain and wind pose no threat. The awnings can even have a screen added onto it so that it also keeps the bugs away when the homeowners choose to stay in the patio at night.

The roll up awning that you get for your home may be one that operates manually or one that is motorized.  Both kinds offer advantages, and still provide the shade and protection you need.  In the case of the motorized ones, these come with an electric motor which is hidden inside the roller bar of the awning.  With a remote control, it either opens or closes the awning.  Some are manually opened or closed and others come with a hand crank.  You can also get your roll up awning to be one that you can use to install a solar shade.  This means that the awning is made up of canvas or mesh fabric that blocks the sun rays even though it’s see-through.

There are so many options now with awnings. It’s a definite item to have installed to your home for more comfortable times spent outdoors.
